Mar de Frades Albariño – Atlantic freshness from Rías Baixas

Mar de Frades Albariño is more than just a classic Spanish white wine – it is a precise expression of its origins. In the Rías Baixas D.O., specifically in the renowned Salnés Valley, wines have been produced since 1987 that clearly reflect the influence of the Atlantic.

The cool, humid climate and proximity to the ocean define the style: fresh, mineral and with a distinctive salty note. It is precisely this combination that makes Albariño from Rías Baixas one of the most sought-after white wine categories on the international market today.

Winemaker Paula Fandiño is responsible for the distinctive style at Mar de Frades. She advocates a clear, minimalist approach in the cellar – with the aim of authentically reflecting the typicity of the Albariño grape variety and the terroir. Selective hand-harvesting, gentle processing and precise work during ageing result in a wine with tension and depth.

In the glass, the Mar de Frades Albariño reveals:

  • fresh citrus fruit
  • floral notes
  • delicate minerality
  • lively acidity and a salty finish

Its profile makes it particularly versatile in the restaurant trade: ideal with fish, seafood, light Mediterranean dishes or as a crisp aperitif.

Another distinguishing feature is the iconic blue bottle with a thermochromic label – a visual detail that attracts attention and boosts sales in the glass.

Mar de Frades Albariño represents a modern, Atlantic-influenced white wine from Spain – crisp, fresh and with a distinctive character. A style that impresses both in specialist shops and in the hospitality sector, and stands out clearly from the classic, fruit-forward white wine profile.

Mar de Frades – a taste of the Atlantic in a glass

On the rugged Atlantic coast of Galicia, in the heart of the Salnés Valley, Albariños have been produced since 1987 that are less flamboyant but all the more precise for it. The climate here plays no supporting role: humidity, cool temperatures and the proximity to the ocean have a distinct influence on the wines. What ends up in the glass is not a lush white wine, but a clear, focused style – fresh, salty, with a lively edge.

The winery’s signature approach is consistent: selective hand-harvesting, close attention in the vineyard, gentle processing. The aim is not an over-the-top wine, but one that conveys its origins. The nose reveals citrus, white flowers, and sometimes a hint of eucalyptus. On the palate, it feels lively, almost electrifying, with that typical salty note that lingers long after.

Visually, too, it leaves a lasting impression: the blue bottle has long since become a trademark. A detail that is quickly recognised, particularly in wine shops or on wine lists. Mar de Frades is not a wine that needs explaining – but one that wants to be discovered. Especially when freshness, precision and drinkability are called for.
