180 Years of Fernet-Branca – A Success Story from Milan
Since 1845, Fernet-Branca has stood for Italian craftsmanship, tradition, and distinctive character. On the occasion of its 180th anniversary, the family-owned company looks back on an impressive history and a worldwide presence.
A Family Business with History
180 years ago, in 1845, Bernardino Branca founded the Fratelli Branca distillery in Milan together with his three sons. The company remains family-owned to this day and is now run by the fifth generation under Niccolò Branca.
The Secret of 27 Botanicals
The secret behind Fernet-Branca lies in its complex recipe: 27 carefully selected botanicals – including saffron, chamomile, myrrh, rhubarb, zedoary, galangal, cinnamon, red cinchona bark, iris, and linden – give the bitter its unmistakable depth. The exact recipe has remained a closely guarded family secret for 180 years.
A Recognisable Symbol
The iconic logo featuring an eagle clutching a bottle of Fernet-Branca above the globe was created by the artist Leopoldo Metlicovitz and symbolises the brand’s international presence.
Maturation and Character
After one year of ageing in oak casks, Fernet-Branca is bottled at 35% vol. The distinctive bitter is ideally suited for the bar and is appreciated neat, on ice, or as an ingredient in classic and modern drinks alike.
Serving Suggestion: The Branchinotto
A popular serving suggestion is the Branchinotto – a balanced combination of Fernet-Branca and Chinotto, the aromatic citrus fruit with a bittersweet note.
Preparation: Pour 5 cl of Fernet-Branca, 10 cl of Chinotto, and ice cubes into a highball glass, stir, and garnish with an orange slice.
