Tradition since 1525
According to legend, the liqueur was created in the 16th century in the Italian town of Saronno by a young woman for the painter Bernardino Luini. In 1525, the artist, a student of Leonardo da Vinci, was commissioned to decorate the Sanctuary of the Madonna dei Miracoli. To portray the Madonna, he chose a beautiful innkeeper as his model. As a token of her gratitude, she gave him a very special gift: a bottle filled with a fragrant, delicate amber-coloured liqueur.
